Gloria T. Allen Grant

The Legacy of Gloria T. Allen: Empowering Students to Prioritize Wellness and Mindfulness

Long before “student wellness” became a buzzword, Gloria understood it intimately. She saw beyond class rosters and academic deadlines. She noticed the stress in a student's eyes during lessons, the hesitation in their voice when asking for help, the quiet signs that someone was carrying more than just a backpack full of books.

Her desk drawer was always full of more than paper clips and sticky notes — it held extra pens, highlighters, notebooks, snack bars, tissues, and sometimes even a handwritten note of encouragement. “Just in case a student needs it,” she’d say. And many did.

Gloria believed that sometimes, success started with the smallest things: a working calculator before a big exam, a journal, or simply someone to say, “You’ve got this.” In every act, she reminded students they mattered — not just for their grades, but for who they were.

When Gloria retired, students and staff alike gathered to honor her impact. They spoke not of job titles or duties, but of the countless ways she uplifted others, one caring gesture at a time. Her legacy now lives on through the Gloria T. Allen Grant, a continuation of her mission: to equip students with the tools, resources, and heart they need to succeed — not just academically, but holistically.

The Gloria T. Allen Grant is a wellness-focused funding opportunity designed to support the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of first-year students. Named in honor of Gloria T. Allen, a trailblazer in compassion in supporting students’ needs within academia and resilience to ensure student’s success , this grant empowers underclassmen to take proactive steps in nurturing their overall health.

Recipients of the Gloria T. Allen Grant can use funds to purchase mindfulness tools, wellness supplies, and participate in stress-relieving activities. Whether it's yoga mats, meditation apps, journaling materials, calming sensory items, or wellness workshops, this grant encourages students to invest in their self-care and build sustainable habits that support academic and personal success.

This grant is more than just financial support—it's a commitment to creating a campus culture where self-awareness, balance, and mental well-being are valued and accessible to all.
